Everyone has their opinions. In this day of social media, it is easy to share them. I believe in constructive criticism, the kind that can lead to improvements. But sometime it is also valid to point out what is just wrong or subpar. Having stayed at 30-40 hotels each year for the past 40+ years, I believe there is a measure of experience in what I conclude. I don't know what government criteria affords this hotel a 4 star rating. A 3 star rating is more appropriate for what is on offer. The price point suggests the former, and I realize this is a pricey resort town. First, where they excel. A very nice and caring staff. They were very helpful in securing taxis for us when we chose not to drive or walk to some restaurants.. High cleanliness standards. A good location just outside the city center. A firm and quality mattress, A secure underground parking garage with ample sized spaces. Now, a litany of negatives, not in any particular order of precedence, but numbered in the off chance someone cares to respond: 1-that parking garage doesn't appear to be referenced on their website. How are you supposed to reserve a space you don't know about? 2-the hotel lists its address on Guy Petit. The entrance, and the garage are on the other side on Francois Mauriac. Even the best GPS can't make up for the hotel failing to mention its effective address. 3-the biggest negative is that the "classic" rooms are painfully small. As someone else has pointed out there are poor quality finishes. Someone got a great deal on ugly wallpaper and fake wood flooring. The bathroom has been somewhat upgraded with a rainwater shower head. But the shower panel is too short to prevent water spray. The shower temperature is limited to lukewarm, either to save on the water bill or to protect folks from getting burned. I prefer to set the temperature of the water myself. The bathroom lighting is dim and tacky and shelf space is minimal. 4-Despite the website pictures and hype, the breakfast buffet is largely mediocre. Just because someone uses the word "artisanal", doesn't mean it is great. Their juice, yogurt and coffee are all substandard. The bread and pastries are of varying quality. The scrambled eggs are usually gone. A few assorted cheeses and fresh fruit are helpful, but not enough to carry the day. 5-Assuming they are expecting international guests, it is a false economy to not have at least one English language television station. For that matter, there are no German and Italian ones either. The television roster shows CNN International, but when you click, it says not available. You can get your news on your laptop, but it doesn't cost much to add a few channels,as most 4 star hotels do. 6-We booked through the Best Westerns US site. When we arrived, the hotel required payment for breakfasts and garage in advance. Fine. When I opened my laptop, I learned that the US site charged us our full 3 day stay upon arrival. That is OK too, but I received no online invoice. Back at the hotel desk, they confirmed they had received payment. When was someone going to let us know? On my request they printed a copy for me. This is not a way to make you feel welcome. I realize these are independent hotels and are not "part of a chain". But I have never had this happen before. It is off putting. We won't be returning and they won't really miss us. Perhaps some readers with similar criteria will find other accommodations too.
