After reading some of the reviews of this hotel I was slightly concerned about what I might encounter for my week long stay here with extended family. I needn't have worried. From the service to the food, the cleanliness to the warm welcome, this is a great hotel which enjoys an excellent location for exploring the local area too. We ate dinner and breakfast every day of our stay - the food was excellent and the breakfast spread, in particular, was impressive. The barista serving delicious fresh coffee to order was a welcome surprise! The hotel has two pools - one with a good bar and service - the lower one with an excellent view over the area to the castle and port. I really can't fault it - great for families and couples; highly recommended.

Heaving read previous reviews I was worried about what to expect. The room was down several steps of stairs, which meant I was reluctant to return to my room unless I really needed to but the room was bright and airy with a view of the tennis courts and gardens. (I was expecting a “dungeon experience” after reading previous reviews) so was pleasantly surprised. The room was lacking a kettle, as I would have liked to be able to make a coffee or sterilise equipment. Towels were replaced daily which wasn’t necessary and better environmentally if we got to choose when they were replaced. As a Vegan couple, we were worried about what would be on offer and having to survive on food that we bought with us (lots of choc au pains) which we didn’t eat many of. Breakfast had a variety of breads, vegan friendly Marge and a variety of jams. There was always fresh fruit, tinned peaches and granola to enjoy. There was a choice of soya milk or rice milk to have with cereal too. The staff were friendly and the coffee was great. Toast was available on request and tomatoes were available. The food available at the poolside was not suitable for vegans, or at least no vegan option on the menu. The food we saw others getting looked really nice but was expensive as portion sizes were enormous. We didn’t ask for anything vegan, instead going to the shop nearby. Dinner was served quite late, from 8pm which would be really hard for younger families. It was often past 9:30 by the time we got to dessert which meant hard on the digestion before bed. As every meal was usually a 4 course meal, we were interested to see what the vegan option would be. Not every course was to our tastes as my partner dislikes tomatoes and quite a lot of veg. We took the view that with four courses, we could pick and choose what we wanted without going hungry. The starters were often grilled veg, olives or salad or focaccia (my favourite). Mains were risotto, pasta, soup. Seconds included schnitzel with rosemary roasted baby potatoes, tofu etc. every day was very different and we particularly enjoyed our waiter trying to explain what we were having, with him really struggling at times to put it in to English. Our waiter was lovely, and amused as he tried to work out what we could have. His English was good, but translating vegan menus was quite challenging. The first few days of arrival were harder as it was clear they hadn’t had time to think about a vegan menu and what could be done, but as the week went on, the service was much faster and menu had been planned in advance. the food was amazing and we felt well cared for. I was put off buying wine as the wine menu was so expensive. At 25 euros a day, over the week the bill would have been 175 euros to have a bottle of wine with each meal, then a further 3 euros a day for a bottle of water. The cost of wine at the local shop was only 1.80 euros, so we were better off having wine before dinner and just buying a glass each for the meal, which was still 5euros a glass. This was a real shame and a luxury we just couldn’t justify. Drinks by the pool were also very expensive. We did splash out on a spritzer each which cost 18 euros for two. We did go in to town and get the same drinks for 5 euros each. On the whole, alcohol was so much cheaper elsewhere, we just avoided buying it at the hotel. The location was really good, with town just being a 15 minute walk. I would advise against going near parks after getting bitten by mosquitoes each time I took the non road route. We met a single female who said she got harassed walking alone in to town with men wanting to take her for drinks and being very persistent, so for single ladies travelling alone, safety was an issue, but fine for couples/friend groups. The pools were lovely. I was relieved to see the main pool getting a good clean, as we’re getting green lichen marks on our swimming stuff which had built up in the pool. Toilets were really clean and close to the pool. My partner had a massage at the spa, which he said was really good. Thank you Hermitage Resort for a lovely, relaxing holiday. Thanks to our waiter who was so lovely and keen to make sure we were happy with our food. You were excellent in your service.

Beware if you are not fit, if you book “Economy” you have 70 steps to reach the lift, if you book “Standard” you have 50 steps. The tennis court is derelict. The advertised shuttle bus to town never appeared once in a week. The management made a MASSIVE blunder in letting rooms to approx 50 children with 10 teachers/parents. They began by invading the swimming pool en mass so any guests wanting a leisurely swim were done. My wife and I managed to avoid the noisy crowd at breakfast by arriving late, but there was no escape at dinner. The whole ambience of the hotel was ruined. There will be many complaints. That said, The hotel and grounds are beautiful. The staff are courteous , efficient, and a pleasure to deal with. The swimming pool is a lovely area. Their restaurant food is excellent. Drinks are quite expensive so we drank mostly elsewhere. The bottom line is that we would come again.

This is a lovely sized hotel, in a relatively good location. The positives: We had half board. The breakfast and evening meal options were excellent. As an English couple, the breakfast was very continental. So if you want anything hot for breakfast, stay elsewhere. The evening meals were fantastic but the portions could be small for some! The menu was very italian. Lovely food. The swimming pools were great and clean. The thermal pool was particularly nice. The room was fine and the air conditioning was excellent. The negatives: There was very little information from the hotel about attractions, excursions or use of local transport options such as buses. Some hotel staff were knowledgeable and helpful, some less so. So Google was essential. Although the food was great I didn't expect to pay for water with my evening meal. This adds an unexpected expenses. Not good. When I tried to get tap water, this wasn't available! The shower in our room was poor. Terrible. Just about worked. OK, enough to have a shower but for a 4 star hotel, I expect a good shower that works correctly. The WiFi was ok but not available in our room! So if you want to plan and pay for excursions, this has to be done through mobile data or finding a spot in the hotel grounds. This is compounded by the lack of holiday information in the hotel. The hotel's beach isn't a beach, it's a very small sandy platform near the water. Not great. Overall we enjoyed our stay but if not for a few negatives this would have been a five star experience.
