“Great resort, poor service.”

Went there mid-April with my girlfriend and two other couples. Upon arrival at check in, they try to tell us we booked a room with 2 twin beds, trying to charge us for a king bed. After arguing they gave us the proper room at no charge (not a good first impression). Resort 8/10: The resort is very nice and modern. We were aware about the renovation but didnt felt like it was an inconvenience. It takes a few days to know how to get around this big resort but nothing is hard to find. Shuttles can be convenient but are irregular. Pools are very big and mostly clean. You can find bars and food all day long around the resort. The beach is very beautiful, bigger than what i thought. Yes there is a lot of seaweed accumulated on the beach, but they clean it over the day, which breaks a bit the beauty of it spread a bad smell across the beach. Mind the wildlife like racoons climbing up the trash around 5 pm. you can also see them going up the stairs at night. Food 7/10: Buffet food is average. A la carte were disappointed. For example, the Brazilian, which we were the most excited to try, was average. They just served us all the meat almost all at once without giving us time to really enjoy. The meat then went dry and tasteless. They do offer a lot of variety of food all day long, which you can find something you like for sure. They are not excellent at one thing, but are ok at many others. This is only my opinion as food is very base on likes and dislikes between individuals. Service 3/10: Now this is where it may make me never go back again. Service was ether really good or terrible. At the restaurant or buffet, Service was very good. At most of the bar, i had to wait for the bartender to finish showing off to the server to get service. Pool service was also good. The worst service you can get is when you needed something for the room. Staff were mixt up and often say YES without knowing what they were talking about. Concierges only give you the impression to be helpful and only care about good review. They prefer asking for a good review than actually giving you good service. At bars, keep your order simple, otherwise you will not get what you want. At checkout, they didn't even bother asking how was our stay or any feedback (I guess they know the answers). Room 8/10: We add a room in the 2500 building on the bottom floor. I dont know about the higher room, but for us around 7h30 in the morning it gets pretty noisy. The concierge was just across from us and you can hear every words being said. You can also hear the cleaning crews and the shuttle flying by. For the room itself, its pretty, modern, clean and spacious. we did have issue with water one day have no cold water and the other missing hot water. Don't even bother telling the reception about it. Activities 7/10: There is a lot to do on the resort. the pool around the buffet is were you want to be if you want a living vibe. if not you can go the the other big pool where its more relax. at the beach you can play volleyball and more sand activities. there is also the lazy river, which is kind of ok. Every night there is some activities. On our week, we had Karaoke, beach party, shows (lion king and Micheal Jackson). but After 10h30-11h00, it was dead in the resort. The Skybar is very nice with modern furniture. You can always go to the disco club, which is pretty fun when there is people. If you have the change, you can check the lagoon (about 20 mins walk from our building). Its very calm and beautiful. Overall 7/10: The resort is very beautiful and feels like you are in a tropical forest. its for the most part clean and well maintain. I would recommend a stay at this resort only if service is not so important to you.

“You get what you pay for!”

I spent a week with my husband at this resort in early April. We bought the trip during a Black Friday sale. Overall the trip was fine…warm weather, pool and relaxation….but we would have been really upset if we paid the advertised “regular” price. We found out a month before our trip that parts of the resort would be closed because of reservations and although we weren’t pleased, we hoped for the best as we didn’t have much choice! Overall the resort wasn’t bad but there were just too many little things to say it was good. The people who work at this resort are all super friendly. From the groundskeepers to the waiters to the front desk staff, everyone greets you with a genuine smile, hola!, how are you? Even when they aren’t being helpful (more on that later) they do it with a big smile on their faces! The resort is quite large but parts of it are closed for renovations so it didn’t seem as large as I read in other reviews. Paths through the resort are winding and surrounded with jungle so I had some trouble getting my bearings, especially at the beginning of the week. We spent most of our time hanging around pool #3 which was the activity pool. It was really big so you didn’t have to worry about being part of the activities if you didn’t want. The activity staff were excellent. They organized games with just the right amount of audience participation. I would have liked to see some games just for kids. It’s pretty sad how competitive grown ass men are when trying to win a t-shirt against 8 year old girls. The theatre was closed. We went to a show on our first night there and it was squished onto a rooftop bar area. The stage area was tiny and the whole band didn’t fit on the stage. They had other shows during the week in the lobby but there were constantly people walking through, to/from the buffet and the front desk. They had a fire show on the beach on our last night and it was great - don’t miss this one! There were lots of chairs available around the pool and we were able to get lounge chairs with a palapa every day without having to reserve them early in the morning. Then again, some buildings were closed because of the renovations so who knows how busy it would be at full capacity. There were quite a few sun beds around the pool but the cushions looked pretty dirty so we didn’t try them out. The lazy river was a nice touch. We didn’t spend much time on the beach. There was a lot of seaweed even though the workers were constantly cleaning it up. There was a good taco stand on the beach but we didn’t learn about this until a few days in. Our room was nice and bright and was really large. We quickly noticed how worn the room was - stains on the couch, the patio doors stuck, there were cracked tiles in the shower. There was no dresser to unpack your clothes and no shelves in the shower for your shampoo. The jets in the tub spat out a yellow/brown liquid and that was really gross. The hallways through the building had peeling paint and cracked tiles. Again, just overall worn out looking. Hopefully this section of the resort will be part of the next round of renovations. The food was fine. The fruit was awesome! Other then that, nothing stands out as being overly good or bad. We went to the Mexican, Japanese and Italian a la cartes. The dinner reservation system was A JOKE! We were told by the front desk to make reservations through our concierge but she was not there on the day we arrived. We tried two other concierges but they wouldn’t book anything for us. We found our concierge, Ice, the next morning. She was really aggressive in trying to get us to attend a “ VIP” breakfast which was followed by a 2 hour presentation and tour of their new facilities. We said no 3 times and she still argued with us. She told us that all the a la cartes were full unless we wanted to eat at 5:30 or 9:30 and said she had to talk to her supervisor. She made it seem we wouldn’t get dinner reservations if we didn’t go to this breakfast. She asked us to come back the following day at 1:30 but she wasn’t there when we came back the next day (she had told us there was a staff meeting at 2 so we made sure we were there right at 1:30). She then continued to contact us throughout the week about this VIP breakfast by sliding 2 notes under our door and then phoning us. We had asked for a late checkout but she told us we couldn’t have one unless we went to this breakfast. We did end up getting a late checkout through the front desk and dinner reservations by talking to another concierge, but this experience with Ice left a really bad impression. I still feel as though this left a permanent stain on our overall impression of this resort. I would not go back to this resort, there are too many others out there that are much better for your money.

Ok honest review time....we got home last night after a weeks vacation and here is what we experienced. As some may know we were very disappointed with not knowing about the renovations until after we booked.....but....it turned out to be in our favor. The resort was fairly quiet for the most part. Lots of places to sit at the beach and around the pools. In general I would rate the resort a 6/10 and here is why.... Buffet- 6.5/10 lots of selection but very bland A la Carte restaurants: Brazilian- 4/10 meat was tough and it was SUPER HOT in the restaurant which made the experience not enjoyable Italian- 5/10 again very bland and I had the Lasagna which was basically a plate of mush and a tiny portion Mexican- 5/10 very bland. We had the fajitas and they were flavorless. Steakhouse- 7.5/10 Steak was cooked well and tasted great. The rest of the meal was just ok. Beach BBQ- 4/10 This would have been higher as one day it was pretty good and the next day it was very bad. The last two days we went there for lunch the food was cold...and I mean COLD. The tacos on the first two days were pretty good and then my wife and our friend were served half cooked chicken and were sick. The Rooms- We started out on the third floor in the 2500 building...but after two days of three flights of stairs (there are no elevators) my bad knee could not take it anymore so we were moved to the ground floor in the 2700 building. The first room was nice but was showing its age. The second room we had for the next 5 nights was in better shape with the exception of the toilet which constantly ran and leaked so bad we had to keep towels around the base to stop it from leaking onto the rest of the floor. After two days of reporting the problem it was finally fixed....which also cleared up the bad smell we had to deal with. Other than that the room was ok...well...if you like cold showers...there was no hot water in the mornings on any of the days. The Drinks- Good for the most part but some days the drinks were very weak and others what you would expect...it depends on who is pouring the drinks. I dont recall drinks being this inconsistent at other resorts but they still tasted ok. The Beach- Very nice and scenic but not for people who want that classic long sandy beach. It is very small but I really enjoyed snorkelling around the cove and the resort does a good job of cleaning up the seaweed. The resort- Pools were great (the two that were open) and the lazy river was ok....needs to be a bit wider in my opinion but it was fine. The Staff- Just like at any resort some are very friendly and some are just there to do the basics. Our concierge was great at helping us set the A la Carte restaurants and worked with us to fix the wrinkles with the room issues. Final thoughts.....we met some GREAT fellow travelers and plan to stay in touch with a few moving forward...we had a good time but still dont think we got full value for what we paid for. The renovations are necessary and should help the resort get back to the level we read about in the reviews but it is going to take time.....will we be back? I would have to say no....we expected a little more in terms of food and I like a longer beach. Nice place and take from this what you will...I tried to be honest and I understand some people have had some great experiences in the past and sometimes memories cloud what is really going on.
