Description
Very little is known about Palmela before Dom Afonso Henriques' conquest of Lisbon, when the Moors surrendered and gave the land over to the Christians. The main landmark of the municipality is its Castle. Built in a prime location, it is key to the area between the Sado and Tejo river basins, one of the points on Lisbon's defence triangle on the south side. The castle, conquered and reconquere... more
The Pousada Castelo de Palmela is located in the historic centre of the city of Palmela, 42 km from Lisbon. Sitting 230 metres above sea level, it has fantastic views of the Serra da Arrábida, over the Atlantic ocean and over the lowlands and vineyards of the region. The Pousada includes cloisters from the old convent constructed in the castle.
Activities available around the Pousada do Castelo de Palmela include Sado river excursions, pedestrian or bicycle trips, canoeing and watching the dolphins in the Sado river. Ask for help at our 24-hour reception. Discover and enjoy local cuisine in the old monk-warriors' mess hall, now the Pousada's restaurant.

This is a beautiful hotel in a stunning location. The bed was extremely comfortable and we appreciated the heavy blanket on an unusually windy night. The high ceilings and traditional furniture are striking. We would have appreciated being able to make tea and coffee in the room, especially as b... more

“stunning location and a fine converted building”
Set in a stunning location on a hill, next to a castle and church, the converted governor's residence offers comfortable rooms with impressive views around the region. it is also very convenient for the airport in Lisbon/Lisboa -we used it on the way back from the Algarve

“Fantastic location and excellent starting point for hiking in the Arrábida.”
Food and facilities up to the usual high pousada standard. We particularly appreciated the dog-friendly attitude of the very friendly and helpful staff.

“Great facility , mediocre breakfast !!!”
Great facility , mediocre breakfast that did not live up to other Posadas we have stayed in . The castle is spectacular with phenomenal views and interesting history. The staff while friendly did not appear to be “ with in “ - for example , they invited us in for a complimentary welcome drink an... more

“A great building, but meals and staffing could improve ”
I visited Portugal on a group tour that included stays at three pousadas. A big takeaway from my experience is that pousadas are remarkably variable. Pousada Mosteiro de Guimaraes, was fantastic, while Conimbriga Hotel Do Paço was abysmal. This one, Pousada Castelo Palmela, was somewhere in-betwe... more
