We had a wonderful, 3 week trip through central and northern Spain, and this hotel was at the bottom of our list. As users of TripAdvisor, we learn to “read between the lines” but sometimes, there are things that can be missed or that may not even be discussed in reviews or forums. I wish that there were a few details that would have been made more clear to me prior to reserving at this hotel. Here are a few of those: LOCATION. The hotel was sold to me as having a privileged location, and while the view of the estuary is very nice, we found the location to be a setback. If your aim is to visit Ribadesella during the high season, getting to town is a whole procedure. You first have to drive down a narrow and sinuous road that could actually add to the experience (the setting is bucolic and attractive), were it wide enough for two-way traffic. It is a 10-minute drive into town and when you get there, finding parking during the high season is an absolute DRAG. We visited a dozen towns and cities in central and northern Spain and nowhere was parking as difficult (morning, afternoon, or evening). Another important note: while it looks like the highway is a stone’s throw from the hotel, you actually have to go down near town to catch the access road that takes you back up to the highway. This applies for drives practically anywhere… to Cangas, Covadonga, Picos de Europa, etc. STAFF. The two ladies that work at the hotel are nice… reserved, yet helpful. Jose, the owner / manager is forcefully engaging, which wouldn’t be so bad, if he weren’t also quite impatient. It seemed as though he was always handling two or three things at once. He made all of us feel uneasy, from the moment we arrived. We travel a lot and it is very rare that we do not enjoy interacting with a staff-member or hotel owner. WEATHER. While you can’t do anything to change climactic conditions, you can build or design accordingly. The windows had glass panes, roll-down shutters, and shears (light curtains). You can’t block light and simultaneously maintain a good airflow through the room. This is not ideal if you want to sleep in… and it is not good if you don’t do well with humid weather. ODORS. While it is a given that you will perceive musty odors in humid environments, this was actually not too bad. What was not acceptable is that our room smelled like cigarette smoke on our second evening there. QUALITY OF SLEEP. The mattresses were more saggy than soft. Combined with the dampness, this made for restless evenings. BREAKFAST. The food was surprisingly good and varied enough for many food requirements and tastes. If I were to come back to Ribadesella, I’d probably opt for something within town or at one of the neighboring beaches. If I wanted a spot up towards the mountains, I’d simply look for something better. Plan well and enjoy your trip!
