Lanzarote: A different island

Lanzarote: A different island

Pure nature, landscapes of enigmatic contrasts, attractive underwater and volcanic scenes, arid and desert land, oasis and palm trees, 200 km. of coastline with fine white, gold and black sand, a privileged climate... The beautiful island of Lanzarote has much to offer.  Declared Biosphere Reserve by Unesco, blends modern and bustling tourist resorts with small white houses, unspoilt areas, landscapes that appear in films like Hace un millón de años, Los abrazos rotos, Invasor, In the Heart of Sea, amongst others.

Lanzarote is a caprice of nature, shaped with flair by its volcanic past and human touch. Nowadays it is impossible to imagine this island without the brilliance of César Manrique, one of its most international son/citizen. Life in the renown Tierra del Fuego goes on quietly, unaware of the tedious worldy problems./tedious problems of the rest of the world. Main Highlights: the lunar appearance of Parque Nacional de Timanfaya, Jameos del Agua, Los Verdes CaveMirador del Río… Those who are gourmets can savour  its excellent gastronomy, wines  and malmseys D.O. Lanzarote (certificate of origin). A land of history and tradition, visited by many artists seeking for inspiration.  However, visiting this paradise is very risky … you may want to stay there forever… like Omar Sharif or José Saramago.

Overall forecast

Lanzarote is an ideal destination to enjoy the beach, 365 days a yeard. It has an annual average temperature of 22º and more than 300 annual sun days. We recommend filling your suitcase with beach clothes, suntan lotion and a light jersey for night time. The geographical contrasts have created several microclimates that make it more interesting to travel around this beautiful island.

It is a destination chosen by thousands of Europeans every year. It’s secret: beautiful beaches, magnificent waves and a pleasant temperature all year round. No wonder Lanzarote is known as the “island of wind” and hosts many surf, windsurf and body board international championships. We suggest surf lovers to head towards the western end of the island. Between La Caleta de Famara and the inviting town La Santa, you will find unique scenarios to enjoy the perfect wave. Costa Teguise and the renowned beach Las Cucharas is the best destination to practice windsurf and the venue of two essential events: the World Windsurfing Championship PWA and the European Freestyle Pro Tour. Costa Teguise offers the visitor magnificent weather conditions to practice windsurfing, as well as several specialised schools along the entire coastline. Whether you’re a beginner in this sport or you wish to improve your style, the island of 300 volcanoes offers you an unlimited number of possibilities. The wind, the waves, the volcanoes and the marine fauna will make your holiday unforgettable. We hope you have good wind!

The story of the Lady of the Volcanoes

During your stay in Lanzarote you will hear about the Lady of the Volcanoes, beloved patron saint of the island.  If you travel to Parque Nacional de Timanfaya, don’t miss the Hermitage of the Virgen de los Dolores, whom the islanders call de los Volcanes. The natives tell a story related to one of the terrible eruptions that occurred in this area, in which lava threatened to engulf the entire town; its inhabitants turned to the Virgin to stop the river of lava; and it stopped. To express their gratitude, they erected the Hermitage in honour of the Virgin in the same place where the miracle occurred. Nowadays, this chapel is visited by natives and foreigners during the Romerías, that are celebrated on the 31st July, which is the date of the extinction of the volcano, and when the Fiesta del Fuego is celebrated.

Lanzarote: a gastronomic island

Gastronomy, without any doubt, is a way of living the island's culture. Lanzarote's cuisine, as that of the other islands, has a Spanish background, however, it has strong African and Latin-American influences, as well as from ancient traditions that go back to the aboriginals. The international cuisine offered a the main tourist resorts harmonises with the traditional dishes such as mojos, gofios and fish. Lanzarote’s cuisine amazes for its delicious simplicity and the way the food is made.  Set out a genuine gastronomic trip through soups, vegetable soups and ropa vieja, excellent meat, goat cheese, its volcanic broths and malmseys... And for gourmets and food lovers, a gastronomy that blends the best traditional cuisine with innovating techniques. Delicious.

A paradise under the Atlantic Ocean

Besides the emerged richness, Lanzarote hides another island full of life under the Atlantic Ocean.  For Sea life lovers, shipwrecks, and thrilling emotions, Lazarote offers interesting submarine routes that will let you enjoy this island beyond firm ground, finding unspoilt areas of natural beauty. Go for this new world! You will experience the weightless feeling and serene freedom under the deep blue ocean.  With its more than 100 diving points catalogued, few people can say they fully know this submarine territory. During your journey you will find groupers, turtles, stingrays, dolphins and even finback and sperm whales.  Keep calm, the marine species in Lanzarote; as in the rest of the Canary Islands’, are quiet and harmless. So if you come across an angel fish, an enormous grouper or even a great hammerhead, this will not be a reason to be alert, but to be excited for being so lucky! Happy dive!

Discover a "salt garden"

The Salt Mines of Janubio, created in 1895, are for many people a salt garden and one of the most incredible landscapes of the island. As if it was a painting, the various ponds that form the salt mines acquire different colours that change with the sun rays, contrasting with the deep blue ocean.  Blinding scenery. A vast area of nearly one million square metres is divided in a huge number of grids separated by dark volcanic rock walls.  The exploitation of the salt mines has continued to date in a traditional way.  During your trip to Lanzarote, don’t miss this site that has been recognised by the UNESCO as one of the most interesting salt mines that remain in Europe. However, what is the effect of salt in this land?  At the beginning of the 20th Century , salt was one of the major sources of income for Lanzarote, as the mines produced sufficient salt to  export to different countries around the world.  At present, the Salinas de Janubio are one of the few mines that are still open, transformed a tourist site that produces 15.000 tons a year of salt. Besides, this white gold is still an essential element of the renowned festivities of Corpus Christi, when the street are decorated with gorgeous salt carpet.
