Located in the heart of downtown, the Sternwheeler Hotel masterfully combines a comfortable stay and good value for money. With a major renovation completed in 2022, the hotel’s common areas and guestrooms have been notably upgraded with a clean and modern look. The last time I stayed at this property – in 2014 when it was known as the Westmark – it looked and felt old . . . maybe 2.5 stars out of 5? Now, though, the hotel is more pleasing aesthetically and the rooms are cozy. As noted, one of the major selling points of the Sternwheeler is its central location. It is within walking distance to numerous tourist attractions, including: The Yukon River, Visitor Information Centre, Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre, MacBride Museum, Lumel Studios, Yukon Theatre (cinema), and the touristy shopping district located along Main Street. In addition, the Sternwheeler is but a stone’s throw away from various restaurants: Giorgio’s, Tim Hortons, the Dirty Northern, Golden Sakura, Antoinette’s, and Gather, to name a few. Thus, from a convenience perspective, the Sternwheeler is tough to beat in terms of its location relative to various attractions and eateries. The largest hotel in Whitehorse, the Sternwheeler is spacious. Its main lobby contains a number of comfortable chairs and couches for guests to relax; it also features an automated soda machine, Yukon merch, and an ATM for those needing some quick cash. The walls of the ground floor are also decorated with historic photos from Whitehorse and the surrounding area, in a nice touch. Beyond the main lobby, the Sternwheeler also features a large conference space, fitness centre, in-house restaurant, and free shuttle service to Erik Nielsen Airport. The in-house restaurant – Tony’s – is nothing short of fantastic and features authentic Italian cuisine and some seafood (see my separate review on this site). We stayed at the Sternwheeler during the Yukon Rendezvous weekend. When we checked into our room, I was immediately impressed with the upgrades that had been done since my last stay in 2014 (when this hotel was branded “Westmark”). It was like night and day. As the Westmark, the hotel felt old and cheap. Now, with renovations completed – and new management and a new name – the Sternwheeler feels refreshed and modern. The WiFi connection was good; we appreciated the mini fridge + coffee maker; the toiletries in the bathroom were fine; and, the bed was comfortable! Best of all, our stay didn’t break the bank! When we visit Whitehorse again, the Sternwheeler will definitely be our accommodation of choice!

Despite some of the negative reviews I read, I was pleasantly surprised. The 2 rooms we had were both clean and quiet. The wifi was totally fine, and the mattress was actually very comfortable. All the appliances worked great. We had a couple small issues with things in the room, but we brought them to the attention of the front desk, and these issues were quickly fixed! The free airport shuttle to and from the hotel was much appreciated. And the restaurant, Tony's, was great! Big portions, quality food and even the house wines were good. I would definitely stay there again, if I return to Whitehorse.

“Central location”

Rooms are updated nicely with good towels and toiletries. The hotel is centrally located in town so it was easy to walk to many sights and restaurants. Too bad there isn’t complimentary breakfast but there is a restaurant onsite. And you should check out the Burnt Toast cafe nearby for breakfast.

“Showing her age”

This hotel is in urgent need of some renovation dollars. It is very tired and looks and feels old. It is a rabbit warren of rooms and corridors. The room itself was clean with basic ammenities provided. Not the most comfortable bed. Location is great, close to Main Street and the river. Unlikely... more
