Naples Holiday Inn This property earns a five-star rating. I’d stay here again when visiting Napoli. The hotel is very, very clean, remodeled well recently, and the room exceeded any stateside Hilton or Marriott in quality and in-room included amenities (outstanding value). Housekeeping is excellent (everything sparkling). Front-desk staff are amazing (friendly, helpful, and concerned – thank you Mimmo, Sabrina, and Christian!). If you don’t speak Italian, not to worry. We felt completely safe and looked-out-for with the front desk staff. Our positive experience was leagues beyond any what one would experience with a domestic hotel of comparable quality, making this property top-of-class. The primary trade seems to be – in January – tour groups and business travel. The on-site restaurant is very good – great pizza and, for 15 Euros, has a super breakfast buffet. Don’t forget to order cappuccino – yum! Finding any lodging at a hotel for a family three in any Italian city is difficult, so we were glad to discover this property. With our big 19-year-old on winter break from university, we got a “one bedroom” suite which has a king bed separated by a partition from a hide-a-bed. That gave us enough privacy for five nights while sight-seeing around Napoli. The Queen sofa bed was perfectly comfortable for him, and Mom and Dad were grateful to have an American Eastern King for ourselves – slept great. If you visit in summer, you’re going to appreciate the air-conditioning! The property is excellent for seeing Naples and its environs. Because it’s near the Garibaldi Centrale train station, we easily took trains to Pompeii and Caserta. It’s also an equally easy taxi ride to the ferries to go to Capri, and other islands as well as the Amalfi coast (we went to Capri, one day). If you want to take a morning train at Centrale, give yourself a half-hour to walk and board a train. Be sure to buy tickets on-line using Trenitalia’s app unless you’re using “circumvesuvius” – to go to Pompeii - in which case you’ll need to buy at the station (give yourself more time to figure out that one – at least 45 minutes). Budget at least a half hour to get to the ferry terminal in a taxi, then more time to purchase tickets at windows on site – because of awful morning traffic. ALWAYS use a taxi to go anywhere in Napoli (see more about that below…). The hotel has, through IHG, a set of vetted tour operators available. You can book them through a terminal in the lobby by the front desk. We hired a private car w/ driver for a day to go to Ravello, Positano, and Amalfi. It was worth the money. The driver was great and we rode in a large Mercedes sedan. The value was spot on because it was much, much easier and more cost-effective than renting a car, driving oneself, or taking a bus tour. One key thing to remember is that the driver knows where to park on the coast. One of the key advantages of having the Holiday Inn vetted tour is that you know it’s reputable and safe. Note: you do need to pay the driver in cash if you don’t pay online or the online payment doesn’t work for some reason (like happened to us). It’s one of the few times we couldn’t pay electronically at point of sale. Be sure to have to enough cash to tip generously. If you engage with the driver for the eight hours you’re all together, you’ll understand why we did. Again, worth every penny. BTW, the hotel’s front desk staff knew we’d booked the tour, knew the company, the tour guide, when we were to be picked-up, and when we were expected to return. We felt very secure. Now, a few notes about visiting Naples. The city has serious issues. The first thought on our way to the historic tourist area was: Gotham. There’s graffiti and trash everywhere. I’m not kidding – everywhere. Everyone you meet – all local folks - will tell you that the city is dangerous after business hours / dark unless you’re in the historic district in large crowds or along the tourist stretch of the waterfront – and we believe them. It’s safe to walk from the holiday Inn to Centrale during morning rush hour while everyone is walking to work. However, after work / sunset take a taxi everywhere. That would be the same if you stayed at a hotel in the historic district and you wanted to get to the train station (no option to walk from the historic district to Centrale, and walking to/from a metro station after dark doesn’t make sense, either). Taxis are safe, available, and affordable. Make sure you have cash for the taxis. Be nice and round up when paying. Speaking of which – if you visit Capri, use the bank ATMs (I used the one in Anacapri) to get cash as they’re super safe. Use bank ATMS – not the freestanding variety. I’d avoid – if possible – using any ATM in Naples. Never “accept conversion” when getting cash. In Summary, the Holiday Inn Naples provides outstanding value and I wouldn’t stay anywhere else in town. Can’t say enough nice things about it. Hat’s off to the super staff. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would feel very safe, secure, and well cared-for upon a return visit – which we want to make.

“No more Naples for me”

Hotel was ok, location is not great there’s really nothing around within walking distance and it’s not safe to wander around. I had dreamed of visiting Italy but Naples really disappointed me I will try a different area next time. Garbage seems to be outside everywhere and I felt very unsafe. Too... more

Took 2 hours to secure a taxi and I was a victim of an attempted mugging twice. Room was clean and well equipped but nothing special. Staff were friendly
