Circle Iceland along its famous Ring Road and unearth the fascinating contrasts of this island

Everything you see and everywhere you go in Iceland will be simply fascinating. And there's no better option to explore the highlights of this country by renting a car and setting off on along Route 1, also known as the Ring Road of Iceland. All on a road trip of some 1,330 kilometres that will take you to natural wonders impossible to forget. We'd like to propose an itinerary that starts out from the capital, the ever-vibrant Reykjavik, and goes all around the country - south, east, north and west - to captivate you with stunning hot pools and a coastline peppered with fjords, those geographical features that turn the sea into endless inlets of towering cliffs. On this island, you can hunt out the Northern Lights, spot whales in the southern waters of the Arctic Circle and marvel at seals in the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon. This land of ice and fire, glaciers and volcanoes, is also home to Europe's largest national park, a slice of reality that inspired none other than Jules Verne's world of fiction. Craters, caves, waterfalls, icebergs, lava fields... the list goes on. In short, a compendium of Mother Nature's wonders. Without forgetting, of course, the pocket-sized fishing villages that live off a cold yet unpolluted ocean.

Important remarks

- Due to the sheer distance between hotels in Iceland, we recommend adapting the itinerary of this road trip according to the hotel selected for your overnight stay.

- Driving in Iceland is straightforward, but please note that many roads are gravel, especially secondary and inland roads. Snow can make driving difficult in some months of the year. This is why we recommend renting a 4x4 vehicle. Many roads are closed in winter because of the snow, but that's when you can visit the ice caves. Always pay attention to speed limit signs, as there are strict fines for speeding. Remember that you have to keep your lights on whenever you're driving. We recommend the use of GPS and/or a good Internet connection due to the poor quality and/or lack of signal.

- Triple rooms in Europe are generally rooms with twin beds or a double, in which a folding bed is installed to accommodate the third person. Due to the inconvenience this causes, we advise against using this option as far the possible.

- The proposed excursions and tours for each day are purely suggestions, as you can tailor the trip to suit your times, tastes and needs.

- A credit card is considered a guarantee, so sometimes you will need one for check-in at hotels.

- Hotels usually have cots available. Otherwise, babies will have to share a bed with an adult.

- To pick up your rental car, you'll need a credit (not debit) card in the name of the person who made the booking, who must also be the named driver of the vehicle.
